Conversation Starters

The Essential Skills for Being Human | NYT - David Brooks makes a strong argument for human connection and attention. “In any collection of humans, there are diminishers and there are illuminators. They know how to ask the right questions at the right times — so that they can see things, at least a bit, from another’s point of view. They shine the brightness of their care on people and make them feel bigger, respected, lit up.” I’m grateful that in my line of work, I get to support a lot of illuminators.

🌱 Who are the “illuminators”on your team? How do you build a strong team of illuminators?

Data show strong return on investment for UNC graduates | Inside Higher Ed - “Graduates who complete an undergraduate degree at one of the UNC System’s universities have a median lifetime return on investment of $500,000 compared to North Carolinians without undergraduate degrees. And completing a degree resulted in upward economic mobility for nearly 90 percent of low-income students.” “By shining a light on post-college earnings and outcomes, other states and systems can make the case for deeper investments that help ensure every student has the opportunity to access postsecondary education and complete a credential.” Glad to see more traditional institutions take the time to collect data and report on the ROI of their programs!

🌱 What’s preventing your institutions from reporting on ROI?
